James Miller named CJHL First Star of November

Penticton, BC: Fresh off being announced as the BCHL’s player of the month for November on December 10, Vees defenceman James Miller has now received some national recognition. He was named the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s First Star for November.

The CJHL encompasses 132 teams across 10 different leagues in Canada from coast to coast.

Miller, from Spruce Grove, enjoyed an incredible month of November where he scored eight goals and added 14 assists for 22 points in 13 games. The eight goals matched his total between the previous two seasons combined over 57 games.

His point totals dwarf what he had during his previous season, both with the Vees and the Olds Grizzlies of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Through 35 games this season, Miller has scored 15 times and added 29 assists for an eye-opening 44 points from the backend.

His 44 points currently sits him tied for fifth in BCHL scoring, and first amongst defencemen by nine points. His 15 goals are also the most by a Penticton Vees defenceman since Mike Reilly scored 24 during the 2011-12 season.

In addition to his impressive offensive totals, Miller has been relied upon as a shutdown defenceman against opposing teams top players all season long. The absence of players with injury has forced Miller to play huge minutes nearly every single game, including over 37 minutes against the Victoria Grizzlies November 17.

Miller’s play has been a huge factor in the Vees current position in the standings as they sit one point behind first place in the Interior Division despite having a shortened lineup on numerous occasions this season.

Miller and the rest of his teammates look to head into the Christmas break in first place, as they have three more games before a 12-day break when they play their first game after Christmas January 4 against Salmon Arm.
